Tragedy and Film

Description

This course considers film as an heir to Greek tragedy, medieval morality plays through Shakespeare and the modern stage. The course treats examples from the Oedipus Rex and Hamlet to mid-20th-century world cinema, with a focus on film’s grammar, syntax and the tragic questions of fate, agency, suffering, and justice in the light of the Christian tradition. The course’s aim is to learn important terms and concepts unique to theatre and cinema, but also to think about tragic narratives in a modern, visual culture.
